How much money could I save?

Here, we’ve aimed to quantify savings based on a typical 100 cow herd. If this doesn’t sum up your farm you could read our Dairy success stories – they’ll give you an idea of how much our dairy farmer customers have and continue to save.

Liquefaction
We’ve calculated that the cost saving associated with the reduction in labour and tractor costs for mixing up a 200,000 gallon tank (typical size for a 100 cow herd) is approximately £951. The cost of the Epizym Cattle plus allowance for a quick agitation just prior to spreading is approximately £375, a saving of £576. Benefits maybe higher where considerable time or contractors are used.

Grassland Management
A review of four Epizym customers, with varying herd sizes, farming practices and geographic locations, show an average saving on bagged fertiliser of £3,926 per 100 cows.

Farmer Savings No. cows Per 100 cows Per cow
Perry Beard £1,680 140 £1,200 £12
Rob Price £3,800 90 £4,222 £42
John Pidsley £8,625 90 £9,583 £96
Richard Allwood £978 140 £699 £7
Total £15,083 460 £15,704 £157
Divided by 4 for average savings £3,926.03 £39.26

Summary, for a 100 cow herd.
"For an outlay of £375 (depending on slurry storage capacity) a benefit of some £4,502 is available to the farmer. Naturally there is some variability according to the systems employed, grass site score etc.

One example of a great result with Epizym
A Cheshire farmer has applied the benefits of the reduction in leaf contamination and faster soil absorption by being able to cut chemical fertiliser applications. Given a low stocking rate, good pastures and being able to apply slurry throughout the growing season, the reduction in nitrogen applications is 50%. This has saved 15 tonnes of nitrogen, cost of £5,175 (2008 prices) for 80 cows and youngstock. This works out at £64.68 per cow or £6,468 per 100 cows.

Stuart Aitkenhead, Managing Director, Epizym   John Pidsley
Thornton Hey Farm, Cheshire
Dairy farmer - 60 milkers, 30 young stock

Milk producer John Pidsley runs a small, all grassland unit with 55 pedigree black and white friesian cows in Cheshire.

“For an investment of only £250 in Epizym Cattle (each year) I save £8,625 in fertiliser costs alone. On top of that, we have labour and diesel savings due to reduced stirring time and no contractor charges”.

Hard to quantify:
“Epizym allows us to take advantage of weather windows for spreading – the slurry is always ready if the weather’s with us.”

Epizym Cattle customers, most of who have been with us for many years, can’t talk enough about the money they have saved as a result of Epizym Cattle over the years. As every farm is different, the amount saved will never be the same. Here, Epizym customers explain savings on their farms.

Stuart Aitkenhead, Managing Director, Epizym   David Hammond
Faulkeners Farm, Hadlow College, Kent
Dairy farmer & one time pig farmer

David is now a dairy farmer but used to have pigs on a 50 hectare farm close to a large residential area in Kent.

“Epizym has definitely saved me money. I would certainly recommend it to other dairy farmers” says David.

David’s saving

Saving on bought in fertiliser £467

Hard to quantify:
Reduced stress levels – the neighbouring community complaints were becoming a problem.
