  Frequently asked questions

Here are the answers to some commonly asked questions. If you have a query that isn't already answered, please submit a question and we'll answer it as quickly as we can.

1. How much Epizym will I need to apply to my lagoon/pit?

Applications of Epizym Pigs are generally based on volume of the storage tanks. Contact us on 0800 083 0720 for technical help if the tanks have storage periods of less than 6 weeks or major problems need to be solved.
Applications of Epizym Cattle are based upon number of cows feeding the slurry pit. See Epizym Pigs usage instructions PDF or Epizym cattle usage instructions PDF for full details of application rates or Contact us and we'll arrange for a distributor to contact you to discuss your individual farm needs with no obligation to purchase.

2. How do I calculate the volume of my lagoon/pit?

Lagoon and pits dimensions are measured (in feet): Length x Width x Depth x 6.25 (cubic feet to gallons conversion)

Or Contact us and we'll arrange for a distributor to contact you to discuss your individual farm needs with no obligation to purchase.

3. I have a crusting problem in my pit/lagoon. Can Epizym help?

Yes, Epizym Pigs and Cattle have been developed to assist the biological decomposition of slurry organic matter that acts as the glue between individual strands of hay, straw etc. Once this glue is removed the straw etc becomes free floating and much easier to mix in and spread.

EPIZYM-CATTLE is a high concentrated, broad spectrum, biological/biochemical complex, in combination with selected ancillary organic chemicals for the positive deodorisation and liquefaction of slurry. EPIZYM-CATTLE is completely safe for humans, animals and plant life, and is noncorrosive to metals, concrete, plastics etc.

4. I have a solids accumulation problem in the bottom of my pit/lagoon. Can Epizym help?

Yes, Epizym has the ability to put the organic solids into suspension up to full holding capacity of the liquid fraction. Hence high volumes of solids may take more than one cycle to clean out completely. This process also allows the odour control bacteria within Epizym to work on odours as this is where they are made and stored.

5. I have an odour problem coming from my lagoon. Will Epizym reduce these odours?

Through its controlled micro biological and enzymatic activity, Epizym reduces odour formation through removing the floor solids where odours are formed and stored and also by acting on odours generated. It is totally different from conventional odour suppressing chemicals in that it functions directly on the source of the odour by enzymatically changing the molecular structure of the odour-causing compounds. Indole and skatole, two of the most potent, penetrating odourisers found in animal waste, are enzymatically reduced to odourless compounds through bio-oxidation with Epizym. Organic amines, which produce some of the most offensive odours, are totally destroyed in the process.

7. Odours have been reduced in the pit after applying Epizym, but I still have problems flushing the pits clean. Why?

There could be many reason for this. Contact us or call your distributor so we can give you advice tailored to your particular situation.

8. After treatment of my lagoon/pit there are no visible signs of active biodigestion (bubbling and material becoming more liquid than solid). Why?

Two to three weeks after treatment of a lagoon or pit the liquids should show bubbling and biologically more active than prior to treatment. If no activity is observed contact us or your distributor to assist you in determining what factors in your operation may be adversely affecting the biological activity in the slurry.

9. My pits are brand new. Can I start using Epizym straight away?

Generally the answer is yes. However, new concrete pits may give an impaired performance in the first cycle through the possible high level of leached calcium but setting up the ecosystem is usually worthwhile.

13. Is using slurry treated by Epizym better than using bought in fertiliser?

No, but if you have slurry on your farm it's common sense to treat it with Epizym and use it to best advantage, by turning it into quality fertiliser that's just as good as bought in fertiliser.

14. I use chemicals. As these end up in the slurry, will this reduce the effectiveness of Epizym in my tanks?

Excessive concentration of chemicals, cleaners, heavy metals or salts (from feed or water sources) and antibiotics in the slurry tank will limit results of Epizym application and should be limited as much as possible. Under normal conditions the dilution of these chemicals are such that they present no problems to the effectiveness of the product. There have been no reported problems over the last 13 years.

15. Can someone visit me on my farm to show me how to use Epizym/help me with a slurry management problem?

Yes, simply contact us on 0800 083 0720 and we'll put you in touch with a distributor near you.

16. I've heard from other farmers that this product just doesn't work. Why is this?

Firstly, was the product they used an Epizym product?

Secondly, it's very important that the product is applied in the correct quantities in the correct way. Sometimes the powder has been thrown over the top of the crust with the expectation it will work. It will not. Powder must be mixed with luke warm water and applied to the liquid fraction.

Our distributors can show you how to do this for free and will return to make sure it's continuing to work for you on your farm. Contact us on 0800 083 0720.

17. I've put Epizym into my liquid fraction but I'm not sure it's working

It normally takes about 6 weeks for Epizym to have a noticeable effect although warm weather can speed this up a little. It is working even through it may not always be obvious. Check for some of the following signs:

• The crust cracking, appearing thinner and becoming mobile (rising and falling with the wind)
• Gaps appearing between the tank or lagoon wall and the crust
• Bubbles coming up through the liquid layer, visible where the cracks have appeared
• Easier and quicker mixing
• Slurry being emptied should appear more liquid in consistency and smell less.
