It does this both through digestion and by putting the slurry solids into suspension, even those within a crust. This makes slurry far easier to pump and spread, greatly reducing blockages in machinery. Liquid slurry also maximises storage capacity in stores, helping farmers with proposed NVZ regulations to store slurry for longer. An odour assessment run on pig slurry by Silsoe’s Research Institute proved gross odour emissions to be reduced by 55% per kg pig liveweight. Indole, skatole and organic amines, three of the most potent and offensive odours in slurry, are reduced to odourless compounds by the bacteria. This makes the job more pleasant for contractors and farm workers alike. It also helps pig farmers to meet IPPC “sensitive receptor” regulations as well as farms receiving complaints from neighbours.
It does this by making ammonia-N more readily available to the crop. A three year study in the Netherlands showed treatment with Epizym can increase crop utilisation of slurry nitrogen from 50% to 60% of the total-N content.
